The summer meeting of the Poverty Bay Truf Club, ( which was commenced on the Makaraka racecourse yesterday, was most successful. There was a good attendance, the fields were exceptionally large, and the handsome stakes offered attracted a number of horses from outside, the district. The presence of the Hawke’s Bay-owned Chanteuse added "interest to the Turanga Stakes, in which Mr. C- J. Parker’s big colt Ballylieigh was also greatly admired. In tlio end Ballylieigh proved too fast for the visitor, and carried off the principal event rather easily. The racing throughout was good, and' some keen finishes were witnessed, especially in the Flying Handicap, in which Rock Ferry, after occupying a bad position at the turn., wore down Pluck, and won, hard ridden, by a head. The course was in splendid order, and though the weather was warm, it was not unpleasantly hot. The many trees provided plenty of shade, and everything was done to enhance the enjoyment of the club’s patrons. A special feature of the day was the large at-' tendance of ladies, by whom some beautiful gowns were worn. Mr. H. Piper again acted as starter, and his work was without fault. The Hon. Captain Tucker officiated as judge, and his verdict in placing the second horse in the Maiden Scurry was questioned, Captain Tucker changing the numbers after the horses had returned to scale. Mr. D. R. De Costa the club’s secretary;, was untiring in his efforts to ensure the success of the gathering. Messrs:. Vita Bros.’ orchestra played an excellent programme of music on the grandstand, and Mrs. Erskine provided luncheon.
Seventeen bookmakers were licensed at £ls for the day, and £6357 was put through the totalisator, as against £5283 for the corresponding day last year.
