The unsatisfactory position of fire insurance rates was referred to recently bv the chairman of directors of tho New Zealand Insurance Company at the annual meeting of the company. He remarked that the year's operations in hre insurance in New Zealand had resulted in a loss, and he believed this had been the experience of all other lire companies doing business in New Zealand. The loss had been caused by the exceedingly low rates which had been ruling, together with the heavy expense which was entailed unon the companies through the contributions under the Fire Brigades Act Dealing with the accident insurance side, lie thought the miners were unwise. in refusing to submit to the medical examinations which the insurance companies required, before taking on the great and indefinite liabilities of the insurance of miners under the law as it now stood. The Government had guaranteed the State Accident Insurance Department, and the result was that the mincowners were forced, in manv instances, to take business to tho State office, and thus the State had taken an unfair advantage over private companies.
