Archibald McNeil, the habitual criminal, who escaped from gaol and was recaptured, was to-day sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and ordered to be kept in close confinement for 14 days and to lose six months’ marks. DEATH BY DROWNING. WANGANUI, Feb. 18. Thomas Cooper, aged 19 years, whose parents reside at Havelock was drowned in the river this morning while bathing. While swimming to the groin he got into the current, which was strong, and he was hoard to cry'out “I'm done! I’m done!” and then sank. Other bathers dived, but were unsuccessful in finding tlie body. Deceased was cmloyed in tlie Lands Department, and had just received word that lie had passed the Senior Civil Service examination. A SUDDEN DEATH. • GORE, Feb. 18.
'There was a sudden death at Rukerau yesterday, when Charles O’Hagan expired, presumably from heart disease, while transacting business in a carpenter’s shop. The Stipendiary Magistrate (Mr. Hutchinson) gave judgment to-day, voiding the late poll proposal to borrow £,50,000 for a new harbor dredge, on the ground that the poll was taken upon an invalid roll, winch excluded more than half the electors from the right to vote.
