GENTLE ANNIE QUARRY.
A DECLINED GIFT. , At yesterday’s meeting of tlie Cook County Council tho Clerk (Mr J. Warren) stated he had received a voucher from the local Receiver of Land Revenue for £l7O, being a refund of valuation of improvements on section 133, block 7, Patutahi S.D., used as a quarry reserve. Ho explained that Mr. Chapman had been paid £l7O for tho improvements on the section in question about 10 years ago, and the Land Board had promised to vest tho reserve in the County. Chapman’s lease, he noticed, had, however, been cancelled in a recent Gazette. The Chairman said it appeared as if it were wanted t- ‘-ko the reserve away from the Council. He considered the money should he declined. The Council had paid for the improvements and tho Government doubtless thought that the -amount preferred would be . accepted without question. It would ho a mistaken move on the Council’s part to do so. The Clerk said that £3B had recently been paid for fencing. He produced the previous correspondence on the matter. . -, s Cr. Matthews pointed out that permission had recently been granted the Borough Council to acquire quarrying rights over the adjoining section with right of access through the county section. He moved that the Minister for. Lands and tlie, Hon. Jas. Carroll he written to asking that the county 'be protected, especially as it was the only quarry it possessed. He also asked that Mr. W. D. S. MacDonald, MiP., and the Hon. Captain Tucker exert their influence in Parliament to retain the quarry for the county.
