SENSATIONAL OCCURRENCE.
* A DESPERATE MAN . [Presh Association.] TAIHAPE, Feb. 23. There was a sensation at Ofiutu last night. It appears that two men, Garick, laborer, aged 25, and Chatfield, married, rode.-to 'Taihape yesterday. Returning late in the afternoon, they evidently quarrelled, and got off their horses, Chatfield being thrown over the bank. Had lie reached the river death would have, been certain, but 'fortunately lie land on the verge of a cliff. He was found subsequently in a dazed condition. His assailant, probably assuming bis companion had been dispo.sed of, rode off, leading the. other horse. He made for Chatfield’s house, where, seizing a calving knife, he threatened to do for the rest of the family. Fortunately, a man named Glover ivas present. After a desperate struggle' he secured the knife. Garlick renewed the fray, and was again disarmed. Then Garlick jumped into a two-horse dray, drove to his lodgings, and secured a loaded gun. He .returned and threatened to shoot-anv-,one who interfered with him. He tried to induce, some spectators to go with him to show him where Chatfield was. They declined. Then he asked for Mrs Chatfield. Being told shehad gone, he said, “I’ll go, too.” Then the gun went off. Garlick fell out of the cart, wounded in the left arm, •chest, and shoulder. The police and -doctors were summoned, and his injuries attended to. This morning the -man was conveyed’ to the Wanganui hospital.
