A BURNHAM ESCAPEE.
GETS A,WAY FROM THE POLICE
Since November last the police have been endeavoring to locate a young man named Albert William Foot, aged twenty years, who absconded from the Burnham Industri"’ School about that time. From time ij time traces of the escapee have been found, but it was not until Saturday last that definite information as to his whereabouts was received, says the Marlborough “Express” of a recent date. Constable King, on February 13th. was notified that Foot was working at a sawmill at Wakainaripa, and was living with some relatives in the vicinity of the mill. Constable King set out to ro-capture Foot on Sunday afternoon, and succeeded in arresting him at 4 p.m. The prisoner was taken to Havelock and looked up. On. Monday morning the Constable set out for Blenheim with his charge, and arrived there safely between 4.30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Foot was placed in the :corridor leading to the prison cells, and the door looked. About 4.45 p.m. he was given some food, and the door .was re-locked. The constables were about the place, and Constable Bird, previously to going off duty at 5 p.m., went and had a look at the prisoner, who was then sitting'on a form m the corridor, and appeared to ho quite reconciled to his fate. A few minutes later, Constable King went out to see if everything was alright with Foot, and to his astonishment found the door of the corridor open and the prisoner gone. Upon examination It was found that the catch portion of the lock had been wrenched off. It is: surmised that the look 'was defective, inasmuch that Ihe portion nv.roncliod off wa/H only fasten- ; ed by' four small screws. An exanuna•fion of ono of the screws found in the yard showed that the catch would be unable to resist any.great force.’
