THE KING AND A PATRIARCH.
A few days before Christmas His Majesty the' King received in audience tlie Patriarch Ingatius Abdullah, Patriarch of the Syrians, who presides over the Community of Syrian Christians in Tarvaneore and Southern. India.
The Patriarch was accompanied to Buckingham Palace by two priests of liis order, and by Mrs. Finn, aged 84, widow of a former British Consul at Jerusalem, whom His Majesty met when he visited, the Holy City as Prince of Wales more than 40 years ago. The Patriarch, who has been staying with the Bishop of Salisbury, is a man of imposing presence, tall and with a long white board. His dress was that associated with Biblical times. The outer garment was of sombre black,-relieved with rich crimson lining of the great bell sleeves. The head-dress was in keeping. He carries a long pastoral staff with a huge knob of silver. The priests were attired in black.
His Majesty welcomed the Patriarch most cordially, and, with Mrs. Finn as interpreter, conversed with him for a considerable time.
It is understood that the King spoke of bis visit to Jerusalem and asked numerous questions as to the condition of affairs there and in .Syria generally. ,» The Patriarch solemnly bestowed his blessing upon the King,
