MAKAURI SCHOOL.
ANNUAL PICNIC. The annual picnic of the Makauri School was held yesterday on the property of Mr. P. Mortleman. The weather conditions were ideal, and there was a large attendance of children, parents, and friends. A great many races for the children were held, _ and particular interest centred aromtet the half-mile (open) for boys. This ” was a fine race, the last 100 yards being desperately fought out between the scratch lad, Ryan, and a much smaller but tremendously plucky boy, Reid, the result being a dead-beat. Tho married ladies race caused a flutter of excitement, and was won by Sirs. Gleimy in fast time. The single ladies race fell to Miss McLean, and Mr. R. Witters carried off tho young men’s race. A -large field, faced the starter for the married men’s race, in which Mr. P. Ryan finished very fast and won by four feet. The tables for lunch and tea. were tastefully laid in a picturesque spot under some kowhai trees, which afforded pleasant shade during the heat of the day. There was an abundance of appetising edibles, and the teaching staff (Mr. J. Waucliop and Miss Thompson), together with the committee and. friends, wore assiduous in their attention to everybody. Before the picnic concluded cheers were given for the teachers, tho committee, and for all who had' helped to make the outing so thoroughly enjoyable.
