THE ELECTORS GISBORNE LICENSING DISTRICT. T ADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— JIJ I accepted nomination as a candidate for tno Licensing Bench when an ejection seemed' unlikely, on the grounds: (a) That I consider it a vicious principle that any organisation should have the solo control and nomination of candidates for any public body, and tliat to safeguard the interests of the. people an election is a necessity. ■ (b) That extreme partisans on either side 1 are undesirable on wliat is practically a judicial 1 bench; moderate men, not pledged to any partizan line, of action, but who are prepared to consider each case fairly on its merits, being required to protect the interests of the public. (c) That since the Liquor Trade exists in accordance with the will of the people,, it should not be regulated in a spirit of bitter-hostility but-strictly and to the best advantage of the travelling and general public..
