SOUTHLAND DEFEATS OTAGO. [Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, March 4. The inter-provincial cricket match, Southland v. Otago, concluded abruptly to-day, Southland winning by 97 runs. This is the first time for eleven years that Southland has beaten Otago, ffalf-an-hour’s play saw the close of Southland’s second innings, the last two men (Keane not out 14 and H. .S. Hamilton 11, adding 27 runs to. the overnight s(core by bright, cricket. For Otago Cummings tbok four wickets for 20 and Macke rsey four for 21. Otago in the second innings collapsed completely, only two men (Rutherford 12 and Chadwick 10) reaching double figures and the'whole side being out for 44. For Southland Huntley took six wickets for 24 and D. Hamilton three for 16. OLD COLLEGE BOYS’ MATCH. A match between Christ’s College am! Wanganui College old boys, resident in the Poverty Bay district, was played on the Victoria Domain yesterday. Christ’s College scored 6S in the first innings and 78 for 5 wickets in the second —total 146, and Wanganui College 229 for one innings. The best scores for Wanganui were: S. -M. Palmer 90, E. T. Wilder 31 (both retired), Gillingham 54, and 11.. C. Murphy 24. Included in Palmer’s score were 15 fours; Milder hit four boundaries, including one drive for six. For Christ’s College the best scores were: A. Seymour 19 (not out), Dr. Williams 13, and J. R. Murphy 13. A-large number of ladies were present, and very good afternoon tea -was provided by Messrs Clare and Sons.

A special meeting of the Management Committee of the Poverty Bay Cricket .Association was held at the British Empire Hotel last evening to inquire into the dispute re the' appointment of umpires, which occurred at Victoria Domain oil Saturday last. After taking the evidence of the captains, the evening was taken up in discussing the matter, but no decision was arrived at. and the inquiry was further adjourned until this evening.
