(TO THE ELECTORS OF THE LICENSING DISTRICT OF , GISBORNE. S' ADIES AND GENTLEMEN—--4 As objection seems tc nave been raised' to the nomination oj candidates to tlie Licensing Committee other than those agreed upon between the No-License party and the jL/icensed Victuallers’ Association, it is necessary that I, as a candidate, should explain why X consented to my nomination and the objects I have in view in putting myself forward foi election. They are as follows: 1. My pui'pose is index>endent oi party or individual. 2. I fail to agree with the direction of any party to the main body of electors as to who shall constitute their representatives. y. I fail to agree with tlje carrying out of any settled policy, the details of which the electors at large are not thoroughly acquainted with. 4. I fail to agree with any policy which has for its object the permission of matters to remain as they are. I therefore advocate my policy as follows: 1. I want,, if possible, to see the solemn pledges that have been made to improve hotel accommodation carried into effect. 2. I want, if possible, to see the accommodation and management oi hotels, in the interests of boarders and travellers, receive more attention than is devoted to the bar trade. o. I want, if possible, to see many details attended to that have hitherto been neglected, except in-a few instances, viz., fire escapes, suitable housing of employees, etc. 4. I want, if possible, to remove all ground for complaint from those who . use hotels for their legitimate purpose other than to obtain liquor. 'O. I do not, if possible, wish to interfere with the already settled policy as to the hours of closing, and the granting of temporary permits to 6ell liquor. * If the importance of the above objects is apreciated by the electors, as 1 am sure it will be by those wdio have to use hotels wdien away from home, I may confidently expect to hear no objection raised to the cost of election, which, after all, is not a valid objection when a question of principle is involved. I remain, - Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, JAMES C-L/iVE COLLINS. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE LICENSING DISTRICT OF GISBORNE.
