In England and "Wales law and order are maintained by a police force of 45,202 men. Mr D. McLaren, M.P. (says the New Zealand “Times”), who is secretary of the Waterside Workers’ Union, asserts that a carpenter and a farrier, both recent, arrivals in this country, had been misled as to the prospects in New Zealand by the High Commissioner in London. It had been told them in London that work in their particular trades was thriving. Sixteen carpenters, according to Mr McLaren, had arrived in Wellington by the last steamer from Tilbury Docks. The advisability of establishing a wool-sorting class in connection with the Wellington Technical School was recently considered by the Director (Mr. W. S. La Trobe), but. nothing will be done at present. Mr. La Trobe reported to the Technical Board on Tuesday. March 3, that he bad some doubts as to the possibility of establishing a very successful class in Wei- - / liugton, as the numerous.country tech, nical schools would be more convenient. Even were there a possibility of establishing a class, this could not 1m», realised unless proper housing was provided, which was practically impossible in the present building. .Consideration of the report was held over, .until the board is ip a position to A provide a substantial building.
