THE LICENSING ELECTION.

[To the Editor.! Shy—He selecting a licensing com niittce, your articles would infer tlia a secret policy has been entered intbetween the No-License League am the Licensed Victuallers, but let in assure you that there is.no secrecy i the air between the two parties, am never can be, as they are diametrical ly o--\oscd to one another. But whoan appeal is made I)3’ the Borougl Council for us to have compassioi upon their depleted finances, it surel. becomes us to consider whether th 'dignity and effectual working of ; committee can be maintained by on< of the parties accepting the continuit; of tlie present demands of the- No License party, viz., closing the hqte bars at 10 o’clock and withholding any conditional licenses. As there i no fresh policy circulated by any o the candidates which .has forced ai election, I still say that such electim was quite unnecessary under the cir cum'stances. The two-fold polio; under which the past committee ha worked has been pronounced success fill by the police and other autliori ties., and if at any time the policj seemed to have fallen short in effect that was not .the failure of the com mittee or their policy, but of the powers that be to work the policy oui with the necessary integrity. It appears to me. therefore—with all re spent to any other well-intentioned candidates—that it becomes us as r. people to join in.supporting these wh< would have obviated this uncalled-in election.—l am, etc., JAMES EAST.
