FIRE BRIGADES’ GONFERENCE.
FIRES IN NEW ZEALAND. [Press Association.] . AUCKLAND, March 9. Speaking at the Fire Brigades’ Conference, Captain Hugo, Government fire inspector y referred to the extiaordinary prevalence of fires in New Zealand. In Wellington, with a population of 60,000, there were 139 fires for the twelve months ended March v . last. According to Old World stater. /*• tics a city of 300,000 people would ‘""have no more fires, while m a European town of 60,000 people under fires would be expected. There was something wrong. Ho attributed the excess of fires in. the Dominion, not so much to incendiarism, as to carelessness engendered by a knowledge that fires would not mean a Joss. He -strongly commented upon over-insur-ance.
