The architect reported on the condition of the school and residence at /Ve Arai. —Tenders to be called for -*>«•* residence, details left to the Chairman. Inspectors Hill and Smith submitted a report on the numbers and ages of children in the lower standards. — On the motion of Air Darton, the report was received, Air. Grant, after speaking to the resolution at some length, intimating that he would aagiu bring up the matter for further-consi-deration.

SCHOOLS CORRESPONDENCE. Alakaraka. —-Application for subsidy Jnrards the cost of horse _ paddock "’granted, not to exceed £25. ° Gisborne. —Inspector Smith to report on. -application for partitions in two class rooms. Nuhaka. —Committee to be informed that the board could not build a shelter shed on land not their proper"Te Karaka. —Fencing round residence to be done.. GENERAL.

A. letter was received from the headmaster of the Gisborne School asking the Board to recognise instructors of swimming appointed at the school. —To bo informed that the Board cannot entertain the request. The Hawke’s Bay Dental Institute offered to undertake the examination of children’s teeth.—Received with thanks, the institute to be asked for details of the scheme. An application for a full time school at Puli a was granted. Letters were received from A. K. Cullen (Hastings), Jones (Napier), and D. Cowan (Gisborne), and Misses Rosie (Hastings) and Brown (Napier) WfiYh reference to their reduced posi- ' ifjiis on the staffs of their respective schools owing to the regulations recent! v brought into force. The Rev. Air. Grant moved for a reWm showing the number of children who by-gan their school lives under jdro'Board m the years 1906, 1907, jftd 1908, and the average ages at which they did so—Carried. It was decided to apply to the Department for a grant to erect _ a teacher’s residence at Port Awanui.— Accounts amounting to £5135 17s

Whittington, gave notice that next meeting he would move —(1) ■‘That the regulations dealing with the grants to school committees be amended so as to arrange for the secondary department to be classed as separate buildings for the payment of capitation allowance”; and (2) “That the Education Board is of opinion that the additional assistants approved under the Education Amendment Act, 1908, dealing with staffs and salaries in public schools, ought to be brought into operation at once wherever certificated teachers can be .obtained.” M .The next meeting of the Board Avas fixed for April 16th.
