OFFICIAL INQUIRY. (Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. March 15. At the- Addington workshops inquiry,. Henderson, foreman ex the boiler shop, stated that the hesviert plates Tollable at Addington were these of three-quar-ers of an inch thick. Two shell plates of thiY thickness arc! 15ft by 9ft 2in ; could be rolled in tour hours and aquarter. They could, put in -500 fin rivets a day. .J. S. Clarke, foieman fitter, said that he had been in all the large, shops in tl:? Dominion, or I the discipline at Addington was as good as in any he had been hi. W. H. Cole, foreman blacksmith’,, said that the staff of smiths was the finest lit New Zealand, and there was also -< good staff in the forge department. John Barbour, moulding shop, foreman. y- id that the plant at Addingtoir was as g-'- .J as in any jobbing shops ho had worked in. The workshop practice at Addington was far superior to that of many American shops. Robert D. McEwan. a turner, stated’ that the men at the Clyde works (Scotland; worked harder than those at Addington. This was due entirely to the bonus system. *
George Butt, foreman fitter, and Daniel .Joseph Brown also gave evidence as to the good work being done at Addington. . Georg.? Edward Richardson, workshops manager at Addington, stated ho hacl issued two rermits to the Hon.
J. E. Jenkinson last November, who did not speak to him on either visit. Tho witness had not vs:: idling as a general thing at Addington. A new .shopshed would be erected for the construction of new locomotives.
The inquiry has been adjourned till to-morrow.
