ARBITRATION COURT.
WELLINGTON GROCERS’ DISPUTE. (Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 18. The Wellington grocers’ dispute 'was heard by the Arbitration Court to-day. Mr. Carey, for the union, said that the parties had been able to agree on all points except the question of the wages of assistant grocers and carters. The wages fixed, six and a half years ago were not commensurate with the cost of living to-day, which had increased IS to 20 per cent. The union asked that an assistant over 23 years of age should receive £3 a week, and that the wages of youths should be in proportion, that the minimum wages of carters should be for driving and attending a single horse £2 10s. two horses £2 10s, and for each additional horse 14s per week, boys under 17 not to be allowed to drive horses in the interests of the safety of the public. The question for the Court was whether £2 os was a living wage. The Court heard evidence, and will make its award later.
