A ta banquet tendered to Mr Bertram Mackeniial, the Australian sculptor, the guests included a number of Ausralian ex-Gove mors and artists. Lord Tennyson, who presided, referred to Mr Mackennal as the pioneer of a noble individual Australian art yet to rise, which would be the glory of tlie Commonwealth and reinvigorate British art. Mr Mackennal, in replying, said that the mystery, of the bush., and its vast silences and distances, would some day inspire great art effort. The Federal capital would afford an opportunity to. create a monument to federation, proving this generation’s full belief in the greatness of the nation yet to comet -
