CHRISTCHURCH, March 18. Tire Hon. Dr. Find lay, who arrived from the north by the Maori this. morn-, inf, paid another visit .of inspection to Lyttelton Gaol, in company with Mr. G. Laurenson, M.P. The M inister made a close examination of that part oi the prison in which vouiig •offenders were placed, and got Mr. Cleary governor of the gaol,' to give him full information as to tlie methods of treatment adopted in regard to this particular class. The Minister stated to an Evening Newiv” reporter, subsequently, that Mr. Cleary had done the best he could with the quarters at his command, but it was clear that the prison was m no way adapted for the classification and proper separate treatment of pv’Soners'from Hi to 21 years of age. r l’he system lie (Dr. Findlay) proposed to adopt would involve, very slight structural alterations, and he hoped by its means to. effect the separation of hard-, oiibd criminals from first offenders; these latter,; again, being subdivided' ; into two. hroad.classes, according to age.• -I■; .... • g :,g. •:
