ALLEGED BREACH. MR G. E. DARTON CHARGED. A case possessing novel features; and the first to be brought within the Dominion came before Mr. W. A. Barton, S.M., at the Magistrate's. Court yesterday, when George Edward Darton was charged that lie did commit an illegal practice within the meaning ol> fdie Legislature Act, 190 S, by paying to Messrs J, Redstone and Sons certain sums of money lor the hire of carriages. for the conveyance of ! electors to 'the polls for' the purpose 'of promoting the election of the ,said George Darton at the Parliamentary election held at Gisborne on November 24, J.9OS. Mr W. L. Rees appeared I'or the defendant, and said ,:that aw ‘attempt woul.be made to:show that the moneys were not paid.' Defendant was .'only served with the summons on Thursday night, and lie had not had time ; to prepare a defence. He asked that the /'hse be remanded. . ' Mr J. W. Nolan said that he had no objection' to an adjournment.
