Air. F. T. Panneli, of Christchurch, is at present in Gisborne. The friends of Mr. C. HT Ambridgo will be glad to learn that he has suffi-.-ciently recovered from his recent illness to get about to wig The Loudon “Daily Mail” is enthusiastic over the Hen. W. Pember Reeves, who has now fully entered on liis new weak. _ Under the heading, “A Great.Golonial,” it says : —“ln a crowded lecture-room at the London School of Economics a man. who has already played a pronmeut part in the drama of Empire, and a kef may play a larger one still, was entering upon a fresh ■stage of his •remsr.ksb'e career. Twenty years ago everyone in New Zealand knew the- name and fame of ‘Willie 5 Reeves, one of THek’ Seddon’s ablest and most active lieutenants. Intended for the law, lie had left it for journalism, had edited a daily newspaper with conspicuous talent, and had at an early age become a Cabinet Minister, entrusted with the most important do- • mocratic reforms. The chief measure which he carried was that which established compulsory axibtratiqn boards. Loudon first knew Era as a resident in 1898, when lie carnet to take up his duties as A gent-General for New Zealand. Ever since then the name of Pember Reeves has been familiar in diplomatic society, among literary people (for he is by way of being a poet as well as a politician), and to newspaper readers through Ins frequent letter; to the “Times.” In the autrnun of last year he liis Government resigning his post, and it then became known that lie was to be the new director of the Louden School of Economics. It was ebiev/dly guessed that this was a prelude to his entering the political arena in England.”
