WAIKOHU COUNTY COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the TYaikoliu County Council was held in the Cook County Council Chambers yesterday. Present Mr. YV. D, S. MacDonald M.P., c(hairman) Crs. Tifren, Lewis, Hutchinson, Campbell, and Telford. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr. G. F. R. Hall (student at Canterbury College), applied, for appoint - merit gg engineer to the Council. The application was received and consideration deferred. - .Mr. L. T. Symes asked the Council -to close two drains on the Rangarehu block. It was decided to obtain a report upon the question before taking any action. . Mr. G. W. Tiffen, chairman of the Wuipaoa Read Board (dissolved), forwarded a statement of the accounts ancl authorities of the Board for the use of the Council. Consideration of the position was held over until next meeting. Mr. C. H. Bridge asked that Mr. George Redpath be appointed on the Assessment Court. The request was complied with. _ Mr. W. D. Lysnar wrote criticising the wisdom of the Council striking a lid general rate and l-9d hospital and charitable aid rats which with subsidy would produce over £IO.OOO. He suggested that a general rate of Id in the £ be struck out of which the hospital - quota cofdd be paid, still leaving £6669 for expenditure. The writer further in- - 'formed councillors that if they insisted upon their legal rights it would be shown that .the Cook County Council would have to pay the Waikohu County •a considerable sum when the accounts came to be adjusted, and he would bo cniite willing to- assist the Council with any information he might possess. , The letter- was received without discussion or comment. • A legal opinion was received from Messrs deLautour, Barker, and Stock in reference to the Te Kara'ka pound, tire statutory half-holiday, and statutory guarantee loans. A statement was presented by the Acting Clerk showing the estimated assets and liabilities on March 3,1909. Value of General Rate (£1,463,729 at l ; jd), collectable after March '24 1909, £7,264 Os 6d; Charitable Aid Rate, collectable, £675 15s 4d; general Government subsidy (on rate collected), collectable on August 1,1909, £1,905; total, £10,204 15s lOcf. Trlotel licenses, collectable June 18, 1909, £4O; dog tax, etc., £6O; grand total, £10,804 15s lOd. Liabilities on March 3,1909, Cook County Council, share of debt (say) £4,000; ditto, wages 3 months, £750; election expenses, £29 18s 6d; wages paid to end of February, 1909, £276 18s; Charitable Aid, £675 15s 4d; total, known liability, £5,732 11s lOd. i GENERAL RATE.
