ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH.

THE NEW MANSE DISCUSSED. At. a representative meeting of the congregation of St. Andrew s Church on Wednesday night, the question of the re-construction of a ucav manse was re-eon.side-red.- _ ■ - On the motion of Mr. E. Church, seconded by Mr. Lewis, the previous resolution to acquire a section in Stanley no ad for a manse site. \vas rescinded. . . .. . A sub-committee, consisting, of Messrs, J. Warren and M. McLeod, submitted the following report: — “Your committee beg to report that Ave have not consulted the architect as directed because we wished to ascertain when the manse should lie erected. We luiA'e made inquiries, arid can readily obtain sites of from half an acre to one acre in extent for £4OO. In every case these are at least half-a-mile from tho church, hut otherwise good dry localities. We have also made inquiries as to the probable result of soiling half an acre of the present church lands, and find that to obtain a cash purchaser for the land would be difficult, and deferred payments would not suit our plans. We therefore recommend, first, that the low parts of the present church lands he filled with clean sand, and a topdressing of soil, at a cost of, say, £l2O. That the new. manse bo built upon or near the site of the present manse, at a cost of, say, £750. That the original idea of building the church to face Childers Road and at tlie corner of Cobdcn Street be adhered to.” \fter lengthy discussion, Air. \\ariren moved, and Mr.-McLeod seconded, that the report lie adopted. An amendment was moved b : v Mr. <x ; Smith, arid seconded by Mv. Leslie,, that tlie hi a rise be erected on the corner iof Childers Road arid Cobden. Street. Further discu-ssion followed, and . the nrotion for the adoption of the report in its entirety was carried by 21. to 19.; T’lie management committee .was in-, structed to proceed with the erect'o.n of .the.new:manse.;.
