AUCKLAND, Mar. 30. Giving judgment in a case in which the manager of the Northern Steamship Company was charged with selling liauor on the steamer Gael while moored alongside the IV aip u wharf, Mr Kettle, S.M., said that the steward had given liquor in exchange for fowls, which were not intended for the benefit of the company. He did not think the defendant or his company were liable, and dismissed the , information, but expressed the opinion that the steward should be prosecuted. DECEASED PERSONS' ESTATES. WELLINGTON. Mar. 30. The largest of the 137 estates of deceased persons ‘finally certified for stamp duty this month were those of Geo. G. Stead (Canterbury) £188,602, Peter Duncan (Canterbury) £24,064, David Thomas (Canterbury) £24.644, James Stothart (Hawke’s Bay) £21,181, John T.. Bell (Canterbury) £17,775. THE TIMBER COMMISSION.INVERCARGILL, Mar. 30. Before the Timber Commission, C. A. Piper, railway traffic manager, said that imported timber was charged at a rate and a-half, and the quantity imported to the Bluff in 1907 was 838,000 feet; in 1908, 1,800,000 feet, including ©O,OOO feet of kauri, and only 15,000 feet of Oregon pine came to the Bluff, James Froggat, sawmiiler, said Is per 100 feet was not a fair return to the sawmiiler, and he could not get an area without going long distances. The-Victorian and New Zealand Agricultural Departments have agreed to reciprocate in giving certificates for exported stallions.
