A nuastcr of a vessel fitted with the necessary apparatus is able to know the exact* position- of the submarine bell, which is located on a rock or other obstacle to navigation. The bells are far from expensive, and the slowness of the marine authorities in.the general adoption of this aid to navigation may he attributed to the lack of eagerness by some shipping companies to see these bolls installed, as it would mean some extra cost in installing .necessary appliances in vessels to catch the sound of : the submarine bells. The New Zealand Shipping Company, however,»recently made an offer to Trinity House to install submarine signalling apparatus free of cost on the Tongue lightship, Thames.. The offer was declined.- A recent cable message from London announces that Tnnity House has decided to introduce submarine fog signals, erecting bells at several places on the English coast.
