INTER-CLUB CONTEST

LICENSED VICTUALLERS’ SHIELD

Great interest is being manifested in the contest between the Poverty Bay Club and the Gisborne Club which takes place to-day, and which is to decide which of the two clubs shall be the holders of the Licensed Victuallers’ shield for the coming 3'ear. As lias already’ been stated, the contest will consist of races between three crews, viz, seniors, juniors and ten-stone crews. The first race takes place at 3.30 p.m. between the senior crews, over the twomile course on the Tarulieru River. At the conclusion the other two races will be rowed on the Wainiata River. The senior race finishes in front of the Poverty Bay .shed, and the winning post for the other races will be at the end" of the wharf. 0 ' v Mr. D. J. Barry lias been appointed judge, Messrs. R.D. B. Robinson and J. Webb starters, Messrs. L. F. Williams and H. McLernon timekeepers, and Mr. W. Hackett umpire. The following are the crews : POVERTY BAY CLUB. " Seniors: M. McLeod (stroke), B. Lowe (3), C. Winter (2),- J. Nicolas (bow). . " .... Juniors: J. Stuart (stroke), J. Bragge (3), H. Holschier (2), S. Doig (bow). Ten-stone crew: C. Somervell (stroke), C. Clark (3), G. Douglas (2), T. McConnell (bow). Colors: Chocolate and white. GISBORNE CLUB. Seniors: G. Pufflett (stroke), 0. Hansen (3), F. Cummings (2), G. Rowe (bow). Juniors: P. Hamilton (stroke), S. Richards (3), B. Bright (2), Grenfell (bow). . Ten-stone crew: C. J. Hamilton (stroke), D. Cowan (3), J. Curtis (2), N. DeLantour (bow). - - Colors: Gold and black. These races will conclude the present rowing sesaon. Popular opinion in rowing circles is that the Poverty Bay Club will retain the shield for another year, but the crews from each shed have been putting in a lot of solid training, and excellent races are anticipated.
