THE ANTARCTIC EXPLORERS
ENTERTAINED AT CHRISTCHURCH. [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, April 4, Lieutenant Shaekleton and the members of the Antarctic expedition and the officers of the Nimrod were entertained by the Canterbury Philosophical Institute at a banquet on Saturday. The proceedings were most enthusiastic. There was a large representative attendance, including the lion. D. Buddo. . , ,• :- .. Replying to the toast of the expedition, Lieutenant Shaekleton acknowledged the help it had received from Captain Scott’s Discovery expedition. He expressed the hope that Britishers would locate tne South Pole, and that the work of the Nimrod expedition would be useful towards gaining that object. Lieutenant Shaekleton received a most enthusiastic ovation, the guests rising, and cheering him to the echo. Bishop Grimes, in proposing .the Army and Navy, warmly eulogised New Zealand’s offer of a Dreadnought.
