PRISON REFORM.
THE GOVERNMENT’S SCHEME
[Per Press Association.]
WELLINGTON, April 5. The Government has decided on an advanced scheme of prison reform. This afternoon Dr. Findlay . stated that Wanganui and Hokitika gaols were to be closed,, and possibly one or two other small prisons. Tills will result in the saving of a very large sum annually. The Government proposes establishing reformatory farms, possibly one in each island to begin with. The idea is to get young men now in prisons to turn to some honest employment when they are released; and the agency of the Labor Department’s officers will be used to assist in the object in view. Dr. Findlay estimates that the prisoners at the tree planting camps (allowing for the worth of their labor) maintain themselves and leave a. balance of £ls 4s 3d.
