THE DREADNOUGHT OFFER
The Federal Prexhier will not lose either in reputation among his- ownpeople or in prestige at Home by Ins decision that m the present crisis_Australia can best serve the Mother Country not by presenting her with a battleship but by increasing the provision made for Australian defence. Our own politicians are behind those of Australia in this matter, ana the gilt Of a battleship will not bring them abreast of the Commonwealth On the contrary, it may be argued with great force that it is folly to spend a million and three-quarters for such a purpose when our own harbor stands badly an need of equipment, when our volunteers need more encoxiragement, and when we are entirely destitute of the vessels we should have m our. own waters to meet an attack. V e are quite certain that it will become quite evident on mature consideration; that New Zealand might have found a better course and one of more, value to the permanent defence of New Zealand. “Southland Times.” .
