WAIKOHU COUNTY TRAMS.

MR. W r . L. REES’ APPLICATION

GRANTED

A number of applications by Mr. W. L. Rees, brought under the Public Works Act, respecting the aiitliorization of the construction by him of a temporary, tramline primarily intended for the carriage of timber from Rakauroa to the railway termiuus, were dealt with by Mr. W. A. .Barton, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon. Mr.- W. ; .L. Rees appeared" in support of his application, but none of the defendants were present. The application respecting J. J. Langer’s land, was first taken. Mr. Rees gave evidence that lie had tlie right by deed to -cut timber on the blocks mentioned in the summons. Geo. Edward Darton stated that he had laid off the. proposed route of the line through -Mr. Langer’s property. The width of the line was 9ft, and the total area of land occupied by the line would be about 3 acres: Two gates would be necessary on the boundaries. lan Simson Simson, land valuer, stated that in bis opinion a fair annual rental. for the land would be 10s per acre. His "Worship remarked that he thought the tramway would be of great benefit to tlie settlers. He would grant the application for the construction of the tramline, rental to be 10s per acre,, and the line to be constrvj bed in twelve months, with tlie right to use it over a period of five years, gates to lie erected •wherever necessary. A similar order was made in the cases of Andrew' Frazer McLean and Jonathan Hutchinson after similar evidence had been tendered by tlie same witnesses. Several further applications were adjourned Until July 7.
