BOROUGH BOUNGIL CANDIDATES.

DEPUTATIONS TO BUSINESS MEN

On Thursday morning Messrs J. Townley, A. F. Kennedy, J. Sheridan, W. Lissant Clayton, B. Hird, E. 11. Mann, and a number of other representative business men waited upon Messrs Robert Johnson, manager for Messrs Sargood, Son, and Ewen, A. T. Hookey,, manager for Messrs A. Clark and Son, C. P. Brown-, of Whataiiptfko, and George Smith, builder, and informed them that at a largely attended meeting of ratepayers held on Wednesday evening, it was unanimously decided to request them to allow themselves to be nominated for seats on the Borough Council at the approaching municipal elections, it was pointed out to the four gentlemen that business men were badly needed on the Council to keep a watch over the affairs of the town, and if they would allow themselves to be nominated the ratepayers who attended the meeting would do all in their power to secure their return.

Mr. George Smith said that he felt flattered at being asked to stand, and •after such a request could not do anything else but accede to the wishes of the meeting. Mr Robert Johnson replied that lie would also like to give an answer in the affirmative, but business reasons prevented him giving an answer at once, and he would ask for a few days to decide. To this the gentlemen readily agreed and pointed out to Mr Johnson that if he was elected they were sure he would make a most able Councillor.

Mr A. T. Hookey also pleaded pressure of business as standing in the way of his prompt acquiescence to tlio request, and added that the meeting night of the Council (Tuesday) was awkward for him, as he already had a fixed engagement for Tuesday evenings. He asked for an hour or two to think over the matter, and in the afternoon informed Mr Mann that he would have to reluctantly decline the request. Mr C. P. Browne also decided to decline the honor of nomination.
