GOOD FRIDAY SERVICES.
HOLY TRINITY CHURCH. - h s .a Good Friday fas observed at Holy Trinity Church with impressive services. On Thursday evening at 7.30, the vicar (tho Rev. L. Dawson Thomas) conducted a solemn service. The altar was divested of its appurtenances, the Crossalone being- left. There was a large congregation, and the Rev. F. W. Chatterton delivered fca earnest address. Yesterday morning, at € o’clock, the vicar, assisted by the Rev.' W*? It. Rob-' orbs, celebrated Holy Communion there being a large number of communicants. At 11 o’clock matins and litany were conducted by the vicar and the Rer. AY. H. Roberts. The choir sang ajipropriate hymns, and the vicar preached rfom the texts, “lie is despised and rejected of men” and “He came into his own, and his own received Him not.” At 2.45 p.m. a children’s service was held, at which there was a fair attendance of young people and adults. After evening prayer the vicar con- - ducted a lantern service, and a number of beautiful photographic and colored pictures were shown. They included some fine views of Jerusalem, Nazareth, the river Jordan, some pictures by old and modern masters, a number of reproductions from the Dore gallery, including “Christ leaving the Praetorium” and Holman Hunt’s world-famc-d picture “The Light of the AA'orld.” Tho picture “Despised and Rejected oft Men” was also reproduced and graphically described. During the service j. number of appropriate hymns were«suing, the words being thrown on tho screen. Mr. Point-on manipulated the lantern. Mr. S’idebottom presided at the organ at the various services. The Festival of Easter will be celebrated to-morrow. There will be- Holy Commun-ion at 6,7, and 8 a.m., and after, the II o’clock service. A children’s service will he held at 2.4-5 p.m., and che-ral evensong at 7 p.m. There will be the usual evening services at 7 o’colc-k in the Ivaiti and Maugapapa-Schools. A children’s* service will be held in the former piace at 2.45 p.m. _ Holy Trinity Church will be decorated this afternoon at 3 o’clock. Offerings of white flowers, toi toi, ferns, ete.,_ will be very welcome, -as wlil be also personal help in decorating. There, veill be a short service in preparation for Easter this evening at 7.30. ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC CHURCKTne special services held at_ St. Mary’s Catholic Church, both on Thursday and yesterday, were most impressive and were largely attended. On Holv Thursday in the early morning: High Mass was sung by Rev. Father Ormond, of Auckland, and after Massa procession was formed to the Altar or 'Repose. The altar was beautifully decorated with a profusion of flowers,, and illuminated by five hundred candles. On Thursday evening the service was' conducted by Rev. Fatnc-r Ormond, who preached a most eloquent sermon, on “The Blessed Eucharist. At 9 a.m. yesterday the church was. densely crowded, and a number of persons unable to gain admission 6rocd outside- Father Lane conducted the service, which consisted of the Mass ot the Pre-Snnctified. At 7.30 p.m. there - V n- another crowded congregation,, when Father Lane preached an impressive sermon on ‘‘Hie Passion. Airs. Phil Barry sang the “Via Dolorosa with much feeling, and at all the services special music was efficiently rendered bv the choir under the conduetorship of Mr. M. A. Neill, witn Miss Neil’ presiding at the organ. 1 he altar decorations, which were really Ueauti;ful, were attended to oy the Children of Mary and the local Sisters of Mercy.
