AUCKLAND TEAM v. POVERTY BAY ELEVEN.
The? visiting Auckland team commenced the opening match of their tour at Victoria Domain on Thursday morning at 10 o’clock, in beautiful weather. R. G. Hallamore, who was elected captain of the local eleven, won the toss from A. M. Howden, who led theAuck-, landers, and Poverty Bay batted. The local men appeared to overrate the strength of the visitors’ attack, and shaped throughout the innings in a most timorous fashion. None of the
batsmen made any attempt to go at the bowling and many of then! allowed Howden and McMahon to toss their slow deliveries -right up to the bat: The innings lasted an hour and a-half, and the ignoble total of 34 was all the eleven could raise. The team was fairly strong in batting, but the majority of the men were palpably nervous, and should have done better against the moderate strength of the visitors’ attack. J., Moore, with 11, was the only batsman to. reach double figures, and he lost his wicket by falling*, into Hussey’s off-theory trap. Hussey was the most successful of the Auckland
bowlers. Ho bowled;with more pace than usual, and had a good command of length. He sent down eight overs, four of which were maidens, for sis runs, and secured three wickets. McMahon (three: for 14) and Howden (two for 8) proved-. successful with their slows. The colt, .W. Coleman, bonded four - overs without a. .single run being scored off him. i"
It was thought that the visitors, with their strong array of batting talent, would run up a. big total, but they opened weakly, and by the time 3*4 runs appeared on the board, McMahon, Hussey, Prime, Sale and Howden had all been sent back. However, the “tail” wagged to some purpose and useful contributions by Coleman, Eastgate, Robinson, Andrew, and McNeill took the total to 122 before the last wicket fell. L. Reed, of Tokomaru, was the most Successful of the local bowlers, securing three wickets for 15 runs, off seven overs. Barker (four for 33), Palmer (two for 21), and W. Oates (one* for 10) also bowled well, the first-named in particular sending down some capital overs. At call of time, 5.1 5 p.m. the local eleven had put on 114 for seven wickets. J. Moore played a very sound defensive innings for 41, watching the hall right on to the- bat. Hallamore (18) and Austen (15, not out) were the only other double-figure scorers. The Auckland captain tried no fewer than seven of his men at the bowling crease, of whom Hussey (three for 15), Sale (one for 11), McMahon (one for 13), and Howden (two for 33) were the successful.
Messrs C. C. Bayliss (Auckland) and R. Thelwall (Poverty Bay) were the umpires. The Auckland team were the guests of the local eleven at lunch at the Record Reign hotel. TO-DAY’S MATCH.
The Auckland team commence the second match of their tour at Victoria Domain this morning at 10 o’clock, when they meet the following local eleven:—E. Whiteley, 1)-. M. Gorman, S. McConnell H. Babbs, E. Sharpies, C. Lasker, J. Davies, P. S. McColl, H. - E- : Maude, J. Charles, and A. Young. After the match on Thursday it ’transpired that Hussey had injured himself, and lias been ordered to rest for a few days. His place, in the team™ to-day will be taken by Bayliss, and It is doubtful whether. Hussey will be* able , to take any further part in the tour. Tliis is greatly to be regretted, as it will considerably weaken the Aucklander’s attack. WAIKOHU v. POVEBTY BAY. A team representing the newly-form-ed Waikohu County Cricket Club made a first appearance at Victoria Domain yesterday, when they met n local eleven. Play commenced, at ]1 a.m., in perfect weather. Eneor captained tlie country team, and W. Gibson led the town side. The- latter won the toss, and decided to bat. The local men-re-mained at the wickets for two and •«- half hours, running up the respectable total of 184. Towards this total AY. Gibson Contributed. -59 before being brilliantly caught and howled, by McMahon off a hot drive, the bowler taking the catch head-high, with tlie lelt hand. The local captain played good cricket, hut should have been taken off a mishit when he had scored 30. Adamson (21), Whyte (20), Daniell (14), Jeffreys (13), ant! turn with the ball..' McMahon (three for 25) howled exceptionally well, employing a fast off-break which required a lot of watching. Brownell (three for 37) also howled well when first put on, securing three wickets for 6 runs with his first three overs. He ln\s a peculiar body action which causes the ball to swerve away to the off. On coming on a second time, his length was defective, and lie came in for punishment. The visitors have a number of good, fast bowlers, but their attack suffered through the absence of slow howlers. W. Dods was the only slow howler on the side. He seeded one for 14, and might have been made more •use of .with advantage. The Waikohu eleven responded with 92. Brownell (20), B. Holdworth (15), McMahon (23), and Hugh Williams (13) showed good form.. Manning, Adamson, Whyte, uvl Oates bowled well for the local team, the visitors went in a second time, and had compiled 62 for seven wickets wluu stumps were drawn at 5.15 p.m.. Howard (26, not out) and Ensor (25) played; good cricket for their runs. B. Jeffreys put up a remarkable bowling performance for the town side in this innings. Ho secured wickets with his first two balls, and also clean bowled, three batmen in his second over,* thus securing five wickets for no. runs off his : first two overs. Ho hadla four n d a two hit Off '’his'third over, and wound up with five wickets for 6 runs off .t 8 balls. '■ r ,:'i '•; ‘ .
