LONDON, April 9. Obituary: Helena Modje.ska, the actress.

[Madame Helena. Modjeska-Chlapow-ska was born at Cracow, Poland, in 1844. She was twice married—to G. W. Modjeska in 1860, and to Charles Bozenta Chlapowski in 186 S. She made her debut as an actress at Bochnia, Poland, in 1861, and her first appearance in English at San Francisco in 1877, as Adrienne Lecouvreur. She fulfilled two London engagements, in which she played leading Shakespearian parts, Camille, Mary Stuart, and other characters. Since 1879 she had several engagements in Poland, Russia, and Austria, but incurred the displeasure of the Russian Government and was, at the beginning of tin’s year, stated to be forbidden by Imperial decree to enter Russian territory. She bad a country home in California, and contributed several articles to American magazines.]
