THE WEATHER.

A A VET HOLIDAY. The rain, which comm..Cred by a few showers on Sunday evening, increased during the night, and the E-aster Monday holiday was completely spoiled. Heavy showers fell almost incessantly up to mid-day, and continued at intermissions during the afternoon and night. All the out-door sports and amusements were consequently abandoned. Tlie committee of the Freezing Works Sports held an early meeting and decided to postpone their outing until a day to be fixed, which probably will be Monday, May 24 (Empire Day). The Muriwai Maori Racing Club’s races were also postponed til: Wednesday and the Baptist Sunday School picnic was likewise abandoned. The present weather conditions were forecasted by Air. Clement AYragge, in Auckland, exactly a week ago. when be supplied the following to the “Auckland Star:”—Local observations indicat* that an Antarctic A T -&haped disturbance, named “Bates,” (after the Rev. D. C. Bates, Government meteoroligist)is now in approximate latitudes 3-Sdeg. to 4-5 deg. E. Such is making easting towards New Zealand, and will probably prove of considerable energy, especially with respect to W.S.W. to S.S.AV. winds, on its western or rear side. Much rain, with squalls, may be expected under these currents south from Dargaville towards the Bluff, with areas of rough sea. The disturbance will be heralded with warm northerly winds, and “Bates” may be expected to affect New Zealand within about eight days from date or rather earlier.
