NIGHT-PROWLER SHOT.
AN EXCITING CHASE. NEWCASTLE (N.S.W.) April 7. At an early hour this morning a man, whose name is given as Augustus Budda, was shot while in tho vicinity of the residence of Mr Percy Taylor, at tho corner of Bourke and Hargravestreets, Carrington. Ho now lies in a, precarious condition in the Newcastle Hospital. About midnight Mr Taylor, who was superintending stevedoring operations on one of the wharves, received a telephone message from his wife stating that some person was endeavoring to break into the house, and that she believed, ho. ..had, secreted himself under-., neatli the building. Ho rang upTSeigoant Turnbull, and asked that officer to 'proceed at once to his residence. The sergeant had jiifirfc reached the house when lie heard a loud report, anu Mr Taylor appeared almost at the same instant on tho verandah with a smoking revolver in his hand, and explained that ho had fired the shot merely to frighten the man from beneath the house. Apparently the shot had the desired effect, for Mrs Taylor from the other side of the house suddenly called out, “You’ve missed him; he’s running this way.” Darting round the premises Sergeant Turnbull and Mr Taylor saw a man scuttling away at top speed. Tho police officer called out, “Stop, or I’ll shoot,” and was about to draw his revolver, when Mr Taylor fired again. The fugitive, however, failed to stop, and for tho third time Mr Taylor fired after him. This time tho shot took effect, and the man staggered and fell to the ground. "When picked up he was found to have been shot in the left thigh. A cab was procured, and the injured man was taken the surgery .of Dr. Crawley, who on making an investigation found in addition to the shot in the thigh a bullet wound in the 'right side of "the hack., The bullet had apparently passed almost through the body, and was embedded under the skin of the left breast. Dr Crawley regarded the injuries as of such a serious nature that the ambulance was sent tor and the man conveyed to the Nett castle Hospital. . ~ ; Before being placed m the cal® the man, in reply to Sergeant Turnbull, stated that he was a seaman on the strainer Period, which is lying at tho sulphide wharf. Ho appears to bo about 30 years of age, and is a foreign ” Tho Hospital authorities state that the patient may recover, although his injuries are of a serious nature.
