There was only a small yarding of sheep and cattle on offer at the usual weekly sale of stock held at Mataj where yesterday. The sheep penned totalled 4000, ail ewes and lambs. There was practically no demand from farmers, a few brokers taking pons at turnover rates. Not one pen reached 10s a head as against 13s 3d and 14s for the same stock last season. The few fats on offer were all bought by butchers and sold as follows: 25 fat ewes at 9s and 20 fat ewes at 59 young ewes 8s 7d, 85 ewes 6s Gd, 15 empty ewes 5s 9d. and* 11 old ewes at 3s 9d. Lambs sold: 296 woolly forwards, at 6s 2d. 66 forwards 5s lid, 3 well-forward at 4s 9d. 108 wether lambs at 5s 6d. 51 at 2s 10d. and 115 small lambs at Is 6d. 8s 3d. Among the store sheep there were some forward lambs and ewes, and these caught a little competition, but the other pens were almost neglected. The following were the principal sales: CATTLE. The cattle pens were fairly well stocked, and there was a fair demand for beef stock, but bidding was Mow for stores. The principal sales were: 1 prime.lat bullock £7, equal to about Is 7d per lOOlbs; 30 forward bullocks £5 ss, 3 beef cows £4 12s 6d, 18 steers £4 Ids, 1 forward bullock at £4 5s and 1 at £4. 1 fat- cow at £5, 11 yearling steers at from £1 5s to £1 15.
