SPRING CLEANING.

Never before in the history of New Zealand has there been such a rational and honest attempt to take advantage of circumstances to pare down the cost of government. In 1881 the Hall-At-kinson Administration made the notorious 10 per cent reduction, by which the charwoman was sacrificed as much as her master; but the present plan to curtail the public expenditure is common sense, systematic, and effective. It is claimed for it that it will effect a saying of a quarter of a million. That is a large sum to withdraw from circulation amongst Civil servants, but it is comforting that it 'will remain in the possession oj: the taxpayers to expend in some better way, let us hope, than in. the maintenance of unnecessary service, not only now but in the future. —“Oamaru Mail.”
