MR. MILLER’S CANDIDATURE.

The news published this morning to the effect that one of the Mayoral candidates, Mr. W. Miller, will be unable to arrive in Gisborne prior to the election, will be keenly regretted by a large number of residents. However, as we have already pointed out, Mr. Miller is so well known to Gisborneites, and he has made his views known so clearly, that there is no real reason why he should not receive all the support which lie would ordinarily secure. The circumstances of his temporary absence are such as to entitle him to every consideration. Mr. Miller, while in England, entered into some business relationships with other gentlemen, and these quite unexpectedly made it necessary for him to make a brief trip to Sydney. As bo explained before leaving, to have neglected to take up the work would have been to sacrifice the business interests, not only of himself, but also of others, and this lie did not feel free to do. Upon learning of this development in his private affairs, Mr. Miller voluntarily offered to retire in favor of some other candidate, but his committee refused to listen to the suggestion that he should withdraw. In view of Mr. Miller’s assurance that, if elected, he will undertake to devote the whole of his time to the duties of the position, it will bo rocogn.’sod that his supporters bad no right, even if they had wished to do so, to accept Mr. Miller's withdrawal. It would, of course, have been very much better if Mr. Miller could have returned in time to address a public meeting, but this, after all, should not prove a serious obstacle to his election. His known characteristics so abundantly qualify him for the Mayoralty of the town that we shall be surprised if he does not win the seat bv a substantial majority.
