ELECTION NOTICES. MAYORAL ELECTION. TO THE BURuESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF GISBORNE. Ladies and gentlemen,— At the request of a large and influential body of ratcpayeis, Candidate for the Mayoralty of Gisborne. I am The unfortunate fact that lam imperatively called away to Australia, and shall be absent for the next few weeks—at the very time when, in fairness to my supporters, I should bo standing the brunt of the contest I most keenly regret. When I was definitely acquainted with the fact that my absence .at such a critical time was utterly unavoidable, I requested my committee to release me from my pledge in the hope that another candidate might be found. After mature consideration, my committee unanimously decided to go on with the contest, in the expressed belief that the residents of Gisborne, who had in past years generously accorded me such unbounded nroofs of their goodwill, would freely recognise that contracts entered into must be loyally carried out, and confidences reposed must be zealously guarded .and would still further increase my debt of gratitude by further and greater proofs of their confidence in electing me to the high offace of Chief Magistrate. Having snent practically the whole of my life in your town and giov.n up amongst youand having recently sat for upwards of seven years at your Council table, I claim to have a thorough grasp of the Borough requirements. Tt elected I promise to devote my whole energies to the promotion of your municipal welfare, so that when the end of my term comes I shall have testified my "election by conscientiously carrying out the many important duties inSent to th/ high office of Mayor of Gisborne. The various matters to my mind requiring immediate attention are: DRAINAGE.—A good and efficient scheme of sewerage for * the whole Borough which, whilst effective, will not prove- too burdensome to the ratepayers. In. this connection I approve of the recent action of the Borough Council in their determination to obtain a further report fiomMr. Maiclian , nnd when this is obtained. 1 consider that Dr. Masons nronosal should be adopted—that all schemes should ; be aid before a board of experts, who + "iU Previously he made acquainted with our financial position and prospects, that such board may decide which scheme shall be submitted to tne burgesses. I regard dStn-iee as a most pressing want of ever increasing necessity, and therefore pledge if. elected, to have proposals submitted m a clear and bnsmesske manner or your approval at the very earliest opportunity. ROADS—I am convinced that a loan of from £25,000 to £30,000 at A + if iudiciouelv handled, be quite sufficient to place our mam arte- ’ SU eh an excellent state of repair that for many years to come a ltl ,■ .• £6OOO to £7OOO per rear would be available from revenue for onforaatlon of our book or secondary streets, and -b?t with Ve advent of cheap metal (if the Present comity tramway pro'ia i, ,„ rr ; pc if wc shall in the near future be able to provide fiist-cl«.-S josaU a • , j without increased taxation.
