BOWLING.

INTER-CLUB MATCH. The third match of the rubber between the Gisborne and Turanganui Bowling Clubs was played yesterday afternoon on the green of the latter. As each club had one win to its credit, and it was known that each intended to do its best to win the rubber, a close contest was anticipated, but contrary to expectations, the match was won by the senior club by the large majority of 35 paints. The Gisborne representatives were successful at three rinks out of the four played, at two of them by very substantial majorities. At- one rink, however, the Turanganui players, skipped by J. J. Martin, well upheld the honor of their club, and beat the Gisborne representatives, who were commanded by T. A. Crawford, by 15 points. The following were the players and scores at the various rinks: G. T. AVilliams, Ambridge, Corson, F. A. Martin (skip) ... 27 Farrell, Jeune, J. P. AVilliams, Sawyer (skip) AV. Pettie, Mackintosh, Robertson, T. A. Crawford (skip) 13 Hird, Bennett, R aid iff e, J. J. Martin (skip) F. AV. (skip) Totals 98 03 The -green was in very good order, playing keen and true. In the earlier stages of the game it became evident that. the. Turanganni representatives were considerably overmatched at two rinks, and could more than hold their own at a third, while at the fourth the opponents were fairly evenly matched. On the seventh head the score was: Gisborne 32 points, Turanganui 17 points. On the 14th head the totals were 66 and 45, and on the 21st as already indicated, 98 and 63. Mr. Mattheivson, president of the Turanganni Club, was unfortunately absent, having gone to Rotorua for the benefit of Ills health. Mr. Hepburn, vice-president, was also unable to be present, and, therefore, the result of the match was announced by the secretary of the chib (Mr. TV. 0. Sheet), who,"after doing (so, expressed his appreciation of the action of Mr. ( W. Pettie; president of the Gisborne Club, in allowing the. Turanganni Club to select the green on which the closing match of the rubber had been played." He added that though the Turanganni Club had been defeated, the match had been a very pleasant one, and he felt sure that the members of the Tuvangamii Club would benefit thereby, nn account of the instruction they had derived from it. He called for three cheers for the Gisborne Club.

These were heartily given by the Tnranganui players, who added one more for the president of the Gisborne Club, Mr. W. Pettie. Mr. W. Pettie thanked Mr. Sheet for his remarks, and expressed the great pleasure the members of his club had derived from the game. Though the Turanganui players had been defeated, they had shown some excellent play. This was especially the case at the rink in which he himself had been playing, in which Mr. J. J. Martin had won a brilliant victory. With regard to what Mr. Sheet had said as to his having allowed the Turanganui Club to choose the green for the match, lie felt that he was only acting in the true spirit of howling hy allowing the junior club, under the circumstances, to select the green. He could say that the. green played very keen and true. He had to thank the members of the Turanganui Club for their kindness and hospitality, and, as to their playing powers, he felt sure, from what they had already done, though they were a young club, that they would, in the future, have 'a club which would be second to none in the Association. Mr. Pettie called for cheers for the Turanganui Club and its secretary, which were enthusiastically given by the members of the Gisborne. Chib. ' T .. , All the howlers present then .united in giving cheers for the absent president of the Turanganui Club and for the ladies. . -?]r.yc-f2 i]jea ri§semL*!cd ui tho
