FREEZING WORKS SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL OUTING
Committee: Messrs Spiers, Tninoy, Roderick, Priestley, Downey, T. Hill, J. H. Hill, Dillon, Hewitt, McGrecvy, Kellet, Munro, James, Corbett, T. Harris, Niven, F. Clark, Drown, Payarno, Tcheno, AW Pilcher, and A. Pilcher. Treasurer: Mr. P. Bowler. Secretary : Mr. Al. Osborne. ' The freezing works sports and picnic, which were postponed from Easter Monday on account of bad weather, were held on the Park racecourse yesterday, and proved a most successful outing. The Gisborne Racing Club generously opened the lawn and grandstand for the use of the public. The business places in town closed at noon, and there was a large attendance. The sports were very creditably managed, the competitirs were sent out well by the starter, Mr. W. Roderick, and the judges, Messrs C. A. Fenwick and A. B. jVhite, gave unquestioned satisfaction. The City Band played selections on the lawn. The Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar) was present, and before the proceedings commenced was asked to give a short address. He said it gave him very great pleasure to accede to the committee’s request to be present, and to formally declare the sports open. Before doingi so, he must apologise for Airs. Lysnar not being able to attend, a-s she had undergone an operation to her eye, and it was considered dangerous for her to venture out, lor fear of the dust and wind. She had asked him to convey to them her best wishes for a successful gathering, and had cent a small donation for prizes in the children’s competition. (Applause). His Worship said ho understood that that was a gathering of the employees of the two freezing' works, and ho congratulated them upon the splendid day, 'which was a great contrast to -the first day the committee bad selected. Ho hoped they would have a successful dav. not only socially, hut also financially, and that the gathering would be a recurring one. These gatherings were good, because they brought people together, and enabled them to meet in a convivial and friendly way. Ho, hoped they would make it an annual fixture, and that each year jt would get larger. It was regrettable that they dkf not have a public ground on which to hold these gatherings—(hear, hear) —but he hoped by next year the Alakaraka Domain would be laid out as a sports ground for such gatherings free of ehargVn They had' to pay for the use of the Park, and it was'a shame that there was not some public place where gatherings of this kind could be held free* of charge. The officials worked hard to get tne events off prompt to time, and the long programme was just finished when die special train was ready to return to town. The {secretary (Air. AI. Osborne) carried out his duties in a most courteous manner. Alcssrg Clare and Sons served afternoon tea and lunch. Altogether the inaugural freezing ■works sports were • a most successful gathering.
