OUTRAGE ON BOARD A STEAMER.
LADY ASSAULTED AND ROBBED

A shocking outrage took place about 2 30 this afternoon aboard the steamer Moeraki, which arrived this morning from the south, en route to (Sydney. Miss Orr, of Oamaru, who intended prodeeeding with some friends to Sydney, having come from Lyttelton by the Moeraki, was reclining in her cabin when a strange man suddenly entoied shut the door, and quickly grasped her by the throat, using considerable violence. Ho demanded her -purse. The terrified woman handed over her purse, containing between £4 and £o - The man then forced her back on the settee and severely punched her face, till she became e. then the brutal robber succeeded in making his escape, and no trace of linn has been found. Tim police and detectives were summoned, and arc busily investigating the circumstances atid making a search. Under medical instructions Miss Orr had to abandon the voyage to Sydnev, it being advisable that she. should" stay in Wellington for the present, She will probably return to Oamaru as soon as she is well enough. A medical examination shows that Miss Orr’s throat is severely lacerated. Her face is horribly swollen, and she is suffering very much from shock.
