TE KARAKA DRAINAGE.
REPORT BY MR. A. F. MATTHEWS. The Works Committee of the Waikohu County Council met in Gisborne yesterday afternoon to consider a further renort and estimate on the drainage of Te Karaka, prepared by Mr A. F Matthews. Cr W. D. S. MacDonald occupied the chair. Mr Matthews’ report was as follows- “ Acting on instructions from y° ur Council. 1 have* the honor to attach herewith an estimate of the cost ot cleaning out the drains m the le Karaka township. I have thought itwould be more convenient to give an estimate for the drain cleaning, a separate one for the pipe dram opposite the 'hotel, and for the culverts across the roads where the existing ones require replacing by larger ones. Tim levels taken have disclosed the fact- th3u a nr eat- part of the water that accumulates about the hotel can be earned down past- the theatre into the river. The same applies on the eastern side of the main road, from Mr fcandlant s: blacksmith’s shop to the outlet at Kipliucr street, across which street a P]P Ldrain is necessary. In reference to tinsoutlet- drain at the bottom of W ailiorm road, it should be- protected in some wav to prevent cattle crossing it, therebv " filling it in and stopping the flon of water. If rough platforms were pun up at the numerous crossings it would, cure the evil. By cutting across to the river, as suggested in my first- report, a saving in distance of the present outlet drain would be seven chains enabling a much better fall to be obtained, less length of drain to maintain, and the more rapid dispersal of the water. In reference to the MangamahaKL I attach an estimate for covering the present decking with rimu. which will last, the life of the present 6tl " Estimate for pipe drains and cleaning out- drains, etc.:—Mam road: For cleaning and grading drains on main road. £l9 0s 3d; Wa.hori road and County drain. £l4 os: Balfour mad aim total >37 3s 3d. The report was informally discussed, •m l Mr Matthews added that he would not recommend the Council to proceed, with laying down the dram pipe befoie th \ftir tC discussi o n, Mr Matthews wasr instructed to call for tenders to be m vitlm, a week, for •*—S<»« «« principal drams ot the township .oV&S&A tvork was allowed remain over till a more tavmirablo seaaon.
