The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORMING. TUESDAY, 27, 1909..' WILLIAM MILLER’S CANDIDATURE.

A main objection to Mr William Miller’s election as Mayor, judged by opponents’ letters and speeches is that hois not in Gisborne at the present time. On the face of it the objection, though not of vital importance, demands an answer, and this is readily provided. Mr Miller had a business engagement in Sydney, which simply could not be postironed, and like the keen business man he is he kept it and at the same time maintained faith with those partners who had put money into an undertaking on the strength of_being able to command his co-operation. But the fact should surely not lose him a single vote. He will not make any the worse Mayor because he spent the last few weeks immediately prior to his election in Sydney. Before going away he made public his views on the chief municipal questions of the day, and for the ■rest it may be assumed that his actions in the Mayoral chair will be those of a shrewd business man, working solely for the welfare of the town and bringing to bear those qualities which spell success. So far from the Sydney visit constituting a valid objection to Mr Miller’s election it gives us the opportunity to emphasise his assurance that if chosen as Mayor he will devote the whole of Ins energies to the duties of the office. In other words, he will not permit any private interests to intervene once lie has taken up the Mayoral work. It is more than probable that such a policy will involve considerable loss to Mr Miller, but the fact that he is prepared to make the sacrifice is but another instance of the patriotism which actuates him in liis connection with public matters.
