A REPLY TO MR LYSNAR
[To Tiie Editor.]
Sir, —Mr Lysnar, after opening, said, •‘‘The form of administration as it stands to-day is wrong. I have done my best to make a change but not- having been .supported was unable to do QJ-l J 3 \ ■ -
I On no occasion has Mr Lysnar ever [brought forward or even hinted that ho would bring forward any measure for the alteration of the administration, whatever that might mean. , “Some of the Councillors had aided him, but the majority of them had been ‘against him, and had blocked the real progressive measures.” | Now, as a matter of fact he was challenged by Councillor Darton and myself at the last meeting of the Council bo name one instance other than the notorious Jickell incident, when he had net the opposition of which he complained. All his proposals with that the exception, were allowed to go to the 'atepayers. It is true the majority of he Council were desirous that tlic maters should be deferred till the money iiarket was more favorable, but that o might not have the same old oxuse they allowed the matters to bo s ealt with by the ratepayers, Mr L-ys-‘ar truly advocated in -a half-hearted 1 tanner that a proposal for a bridge mnectiiig Kaiti and Whataupoko be [deluded. "This suggestion was regardl by the Councillors as a sort of exise'for his covert opposition of Roeick Road bridge by wishing to hang i up till a bridge could bo got from siiti to Whataupoko, and was voted it almost unanimously. Regarding his ticn over Gentle Annie quarry the suit remains to be seen, for in any so tho County Council will exercise . 1 jurisdiction orer their own roads i d will not allow the Borough to churn ' ?m up without compensation. Every lividual councillor considers- that the i vation of the borough is the prosed tram line against which His Worp has absurdly matched the straker ggon. It must be generally conceded it if a new machine is constantly in . id of repairs, as it becomes older the 1 jessity for such repairs will become re frequent. Ir Lysnar’s finance is altogether too j astroiis to merit serious commentt > borough should have a loan and ild long since have had it according resolution had His Worship .not mis- ! you sly interfered. However, the •payers themselves have expressed m eloquent manner their views on Mayor's finance by rejecting by [whelming majorities ljis loan prods. [ jr Lysnar designates the spiral pipes 'Unserviceable mains” but every lable authority is against him and mains are the world over replac- : the costly and less pressure-resisting 'i iron pipes. The-Ai was only one jr scheme submitted to the pubafter careful consideration by the ! , ici 1. I. was not»then a member, but ag an active interest in these matT quite endorsed the selection of Hay’s scheme. Alternate tenders called in cast' iron and steel pipes, the difference between the two j ;t tenders was over £31,000, -and bsses will not be misled by Mr Lysjuggling with the figures of an : pved scheme by comparing them i those of a scheme which had been led. Mr Reynold’s first estimate pply from To Arai was £33,000,. lire of cost of acquisition of wat-er-jand he wound up his report as is: -
