[Per Press Association.] THAMES, April 29. Obituary: Robert Stone, a very old resident of tho Thames, said to be the first man in New Zealand to -build a steamer. He took the first stoamei out of Auckland harbor. THE GOVERNMENT FORESTER. News was received in Gisborne yesterday of the death of Mr. Henry J. Matthew's, Government Forester. Jlie deceased gentleman was on one of his periodical visits to the north, when he was taken seriously ill in Auckland, and had to be taken to a. priv»ate hospital. where an operation was performed and from which he never recovered. Mr Matthews was well known over the length! and breadth of New Zealand, and his death will come as a great shock to his many friends. Being of a happv disposition, he readily made friends, and was bald in the highest respect by all with whom lie came m contact. About three years ago, Mr. ilatthews. along with two other m ellknown botanists. had a very try in g experience* on. the Rock and .» nlai Range, Central Otago, where they were “lost for several days owing to a heavy fo<r on' the mountain. A search party from Dunedin was organised to scour the mountains, -and the three were found, in an exhausted wndition Owin'* to the nature ol his calling, Mr. Matthews had great opportunities, for the. collecting of New Zealand plants and ferns, and Ins collection at Dunedin is said to he the finest in the world. Deceased leaves a widoW. for whom sincere sympathy is widely lolt.
