GISBORNE ROWING CLUB.

PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES

The presentation of the trophies won by the Gisborne Rowing Club during tiie (season 1908*09 took place in the Cosmopolitan Club last evening, when a very enjoyable time was spent by the goodly number of members and sympathisers present. Tables were laid out round the room, being nicely decorated with flowers and ribbon in the club’s colors, black and, gold. At the chief table wore seated the Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar), Messrs W. F. Crawford, R. D. B. Robinson,/ G. H. Ambridge, Seymour, Webb, and ‘Williams. Mr. Lysnar presided atytJie eavlv part of the evening, but resided the chair to Mr. A. F. Kennedy, president of the club, when the Jatterlurlived. A letter was received from the t captain of the club (Mr. Claude Hamilton), who was absent owing to .illness, wishing the club a pleasant evening. An' apology for aV.ouce was also received from Mr. Tv. J. Henuessv. Mr. Lysnar, in opening the evening, caid he had always watched rowing with interest. It was”a sport which developed the body, and if they developed 'the l>odv the mind was also developed and they were, better able to cope wiU; the cares of business. He understood that 'they had 120 members, and Jut placed sixteen crews in tiro contest They had placed a heavy liability upn-,-'themselves by placing orders for new plant. They were living in a different, atmosphere now than the clubs in «idol ays, when they could not get prizes They had many difficulties in the river but he hoped the day was not far distant when they would have the river ‘locked, and then they would be able to have high water at all times. (Applause.) This would not onlv be beneficial to them, but also to the health of the town. He thought the Harbor Board should take this’ln hand, but if they would not do so, then other authorities should come forward. lie had much -pleasure in proposing the toast of “Rowing,” coupled with the names of Messrs Webb (Poverty Bay ‘Rowing Club), and Williams (Gisborne Rowing Club). Captain Webb, on behalf of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club, responded, and said there were no two clubs that worked on the same friendly footing. (Applause.) That was a great deal due to Captain Hamilton, of the Gisborne C?uT. They had -also been well treated by the public. He congratulated the Gisborne Cub on getting the shield, and his club had much pleasure in handing it over, as it had been won in such a snortsmanlike manner. (Applause.) He ‘thought the contests should be widened so as to aliow the Wairoa and Tologa Clubs to enter. This would enhance the value of the shield. Mr. Williams, in the absence of Captain Hamilton, responded for the GisT.orne Club. He thanked Captain Webb for the /many kind things said. lie also honed the contest would be widened.

The Chairman (Mr. Kennedy) then called on the Mayor to make the presentation of piz-es. He thought the winners of the trophies should be proud to get them as they had done a tremendous lot of work. 1 liev should also feel it an honor m having them, presented by the Mayor. The trophies were then presented, the list being as follows: — President's Fours: H. P. Hamilton, S. T. Richards, .J. Cramp, P. O’Meara, H. Chrisp (cox). This crow also took 'a challenge cup. Hennessy s Fours: L. F. Williams, D. Cowan, S. Coleman, L. Bright, J. Chris]) (cox). Schumacher Fours: H. P. Hamilton, J. Curtis. J. Cramp, P. T. Kaipara, J. Chrisp (cox). A challenge cup also went to this crew. Morse's Fours: 0. Hansen, E. W. Grenfell, A. Donald, -J. Wyrner, H. Chrisp (cox). Busch o Fours: B. Bright, A. Donald, J. McLean. S. Coleman, 11. Chrisp (cox). T. Adair’s Trophies :H. P..''Hamilton. D. Cowan, W. Henley, J. Sutcliffe, H. Chrisp (cox). Trophies won in 1907-8 in the ...cbumacher Fours were -also presented to Messrs Hamilton and Parnell, the trophies to the other niemoers having been presented previously. Mr. D. Cowan proposed the next toast ,and said that- it was the toast, of the evening, the donors of the handsome- trophies. (Applause.) _ The sport, he said, would fall fiat- after a. time if they did not have some inducements.' Ail the trophies had been voluntary contributions, and the g-entlo-'men who had presented them had been ■real good snorts.
