WHITE ISLAND.
IN ERUPTION ON THURSDAY
An eruption of White Island was seen from the New Zealand Shipping Company’s s.s. Ivaipara early on lhursday morning during tho pasasge of the* vessel- from Auckland to Gisborne. Mr. Worthington, second officer of the steamer, reports that from 2 a.m. to daylight a continuous stream or black smolce, in which flames were distinctly seen, rose from the island. The ci uption was visible froju a distance or o-u miles. The position of the steamer at the time was latitude 37.00 south, longitude 177.04 east.
