FIRE AT KAITI.

A RESIDENCE DAMAGED

Just before a quarter to one o'clock yesterday afternoon, an alarm \vas given of” a fire at the residence of Mr. G. F. Wilson, at Ivaiti, and though the •building-was not totally destroyed considerable damage was done to the ceding, fittings and furnishings of the almost new eight-roomed weather-board house. At the time of the outbreak Mrs. Wilson was using a gas ring in the scullery and left it for a few moments. When ■she returned she saw the walls and coiling of the scullery and kitchen an fl-ivcs The rubber tubing to the ring, it is thought, caught fire and carried the flames to the wall. A bakers bov was passing and after making an attempt to put out the flames gave the alarm, -and Messrs Percy A romm ; and Barlow, who live near by wore quickly on the scene. They ripped some sheets of iron eft’ the roof and, passing uuckets ■o f water, soon .got the fire under. In a short tiiuc the Fire Brigaue arrived with the manual pumping engine, and connecting a liose to Mr. Crompton s tank played a stream of water on to tin. kitchen and scullery, and soon extinguished the flames. \ had meanwhile removed large quantities of furniture outside, which the rain that was falling.soon wet, The house was owned by the estate of •Hio life Mr J A. Harding, and was •insured in the Sun Fire Office for £6OO •and the furniture in the Akianco Office for £4OO. Mr. Wilson estimates the •damage bv fire and watei vat £-v)U. W if worthy of note that- an horn; after the fire, an order was given bv the representative of the Sun Insurance Co! to repair the damage done to the house.
